Education System:

• Language of Instruction in Primary School: Kiswahili
• Language of Instruction in Secondary School: English
• For many students English is their 3rd language. Especially in rural areas, Kiswahili is not the first language learned by children.
• Pre-Primary School (2 years):
• Primary School (7 years): Standards I through VII (Grades 1-7 in the U.S.)
• Primary School is universal and at no cost to the students except for uniform, shoes, school supplies, and sometimes food or cooks or security staff wages.
• Lower Secondary School – Ordinary Levels (4 years): Forms 1 though 4 (Grades 8-11 in the U.S.)
• Upper Secondary School – Advanced Levels (2 years): Forms 5 and 6 (Grades 12-13 in the U.S.)
• University – Diploma: 3 years
